Departing from Portobelo, Panama
Portobelo is a very chilled seaside town. We choose to arrive and depart on our trips from Panama to Colombia here because basically it saves you money.
The public buses depart from Albrook transport terminal in Panama City and cost only $5 to travel to Portobelo. Take the Colon Express from Albrook. Disembark at Sabanitas and hop on the bus to Portobelo there.
Islands visited will depend on the weather and the anchoring conditions. You will likely visit 3 groups of islands with a total trip duration of 5 nights.
Some occasions we may need to leave certain areas earlier than planned, or even stay longer. On all trips we will endeavor to spend 3 full days within The San Bas Islands, departing for Cartagena in the afternoon or early evening of fourth night. The sailing passage from Panama to Colombia averages 32 hours the travel time can be less or more depending on predominant wind, sea conditions at the time.
Day 1 – A day of leasure to relax and explore the historically significant village of Portobelo. Boarding Ave Maria at sunset for an overnight sail under star filled skies to San Blas.
Day 2 – Expect to drop anchor by an island paradise at around sunrise or shortly thereafter.
This is the first full day in San Blas. You will be waking up in paradise surrounded by azure waters, coconut palm covered islands, white sandy beaches and fabulous coral reefs. Today as with each morning Captain Paul with share his tips for finding the best snorkeling spots and some general advise on how to make the best of your island time. This being the first of 3 full days you will enjoy in the Archipelago de San Blas.
Day 3 – Another full day in San Blas. Ave Maria will visit the more remote, authentic uninhabited islands off the main tourist route. Today is the day for our all that you can eat beach barbecue buffet. This being the 2nd of the 3 full days you will enjoy in the island paradise of San Blas.
Day 4 – Another day in paradise. Shortly after breakfast we will raise the anchor an sail to another splendid island to enjoy some more time to relax, explore and immurse ourselves in the natural treasures that surround us.
Shortly before sunset we will raise anchor and set sail. On our voyage from Panama to Colombia, bound for Cartagena. On most nights we enjoy under brilliant filled skies and surrounded by sparkling bioluminescence.
Day 5 – Full day and most of the night at sea
Day 6 – Normally we arrive in Cartagena during the early hours of the morning. Well before sunrise. Waking up as normal and shortly after breakfast. Say 9:30 am we will disembark and attend to the immigration formalities which are quite a efficient stress free procedure. Usually by 11:30 am you will be on your way persuing new adventures. The main accommodation district and colonial center of Cartagena is only a short distance away. Expect to pay COP $7,000 around US$2.50 for a taxi. There are ATM’s with in close proximity to our landing point.
